DBS just took its AI training playbook outside the bank
MOU with IBF: Uplift, Upskill, Upbuild. 40,000 trained globally. The 35,000 domestic figure is a January story. Keep them straight.
DBS just took its AI training playbook outside the bank
Most bank AI stories are inward: our people, our Copilot, our chatbot. You've probably read a dozen of them this year and learned nothing about the sector. DBS signed an agreement that takes the playbook outside the building. That is the only interesting part.
DBS signed a memorandum of understanding with the Institute of Banking and Finance Singapore. DBS says it is IBF's first such deal with a financial institution. The point of the document is not another internal academy. It is the sector.
Three words that are at least clear: Uplift, Upskill, Upbuild.
Uplift is the floor: IBF-recognised programmes covering AI governance, responsible AI, prompt engineering and practical applications. Upskill is the middle: IBF's Job Redesign and Reskilling Career Conversion Programme, plus DBS's claim it has already upskilled more than 11,000 people in roles reshaped by AI. Upbuild is the next generation: IBF's Young Talent Programme for AI in Finance, DBS as a pioneer partner, and more than 500 local young hires in 2026 across associates, interns and trainees.
The numbers DBS will put on paper
DBS says 40,000 employees globally have foundational AI skills, 14,800 of them in Singapore. More than 100 Career Advisors sit on top of a Career Advisory Service that is live in six core markets. The tools underneath are iGrow, launched in 2022 for learning and job recommendations, and iCoach, launched in 2025 with Marshall Goldsmith for on-demand coaching. Human advisers on top. I like the "human in the lead" posture more than the product names.
Lee Yan Hong, Head of Group Human Resources at DBS, said they see AI as a cognitive enhancer, and the philosophy is to save people, not jobs. Jobs will change. They want to bring everyone along. Carolyn Neo, chief executive of IBF, said the memorandum puts people at the heart of it, and IBF wants to test workforce interventions with DBS so other institutions can copy.
An industry body, a bank and a job-redesign programme is a more serious object than a one-day hackathon.
The domestic retraining figure
Chee Hong Tat, who is also deputy chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, said in January that DBS, OCBC and UOB are retraining all 35,000 of their domestic staff over one to two years. The August memorandum is DBS and IBF: sector programmes, 40,000 people with foundational skills, more than 11,000 already in reshaped roles, and more than 500 local young hires in 2026. Same city. Different objects.
If you run a bank in Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia, the practice to copy is the three-layer stack: a floor for everyone, redesign for the roles that actually moved, and a youth pipe so you are not only reskilling the incumbents. That is closer to how we train teams than a single "AI 101" course with a certificate at the end.
The Career Advisory Service is the part most copies will skip because it is expensive. A hundred humans plus iGrow plus iCoach is not a chatbot. Lee's "save people, not jobs" line only works if someone will sit with the person whose role just got redesigned. A memorandum with IBF gives other Singapore banks a template. It does not give them 100 advisers. Budget for the humans or do not use the quote.
What this means for L&D
Sign the industry body, not just the learning platform. Publish the 11,000 (or your number) of roles that already changed. Put humans on career advice next to the bot. The January retraining figure covers three banks. The August memorandum is DBS and IBF. Use the number that matches the programme you are copying.
