Anthropic leased Stage 1 in Queensland. Inference, not a training fairy tale.

Anthropic leased a building in Queensland. The Foreign Investment Review Board has not said yes. You've probably watched a press conference turn a lease into a national strategy. The campus is 2.16 gigawatts. That is the asset on the page. Approval is still pending.

This is Anthropic's first Australian data-centre agreement: Stage 1 of Western Downs Digital Park near Dalby. Dexus told the ASX. The park is described as about A$32 billion, 725 hectares, the largest data-centre campus planned in the country, power in the region of 1.5 million households, and four to six years to build. Singaporean Zerra DC is the developer. Macquarie Capital sits in the consortium via Australian Data Centre Company. The tenant for Stage 1 is an Australian subsidiary of Anthropic, subject to customary approvals. FIRB is still pending. The council development application went in last month. Western Downs Mayor Andrew Smith talked about around 1,000 jobs and said, correctly, it is not a done deal.

Claude inference. Say it twice.

The use is inference for Claude, not training. Inference is what your staff actually hit when they open Claude at 9am. Training lives somewhere else. A Queensland inference lease is not a foundation-model lab. A board brief on "sovereign AI" that skips that line is briefing the wrong asset.

Premier David Crisafulli called it a major win from a trade mission: jobs, energy into the grid, a story about driving down power prices. David Littleproud asked for genuine lasting benefits and power that stays reliable. Liza Balmain of Save Our Darling Downs pointed at energy, gas and aquifers. Anthropic said it will invest in local communities, hire an engagement manager and cover the full grid connection cost. Those are the named people. Dario Amodei appears in the iTnews copy as the slow-pace warning, not as the person who signed Dalby.

OpenAI taking Sydney offtake last year is context, not this deal. Keep them in different paragraphs or you will write a mash-up.

Why the lease changes the enablement argument

The constraint on every AI literacy programme in Australia is not a course catalogue. It is capacity, cost and whether the tool is even allowed to sit in this country. A Stage 1 inference lease does not train your workforce. It changes the argument your CISO and procurement can have. If you still cannot name who owns enablement while the park takes four to six years to rise, you will arrive at 2027 with megawatts and no operators. Start the skills work on a real workflow now, not when the campus is poured.

Crisafulli's trade-mission framing and Balmain's aquifer warning can both be true in the same week. That is what a 725-hectare, 2.16 GW story looks like from the ground. Littleproud asking for lasting benefits and reliable power is the question your board will copy. Anthropic covering the grid connection and hiring an engagement manager is the concession you should expect to see in the next offtake, not a unique act of charity.

Keep the corporate stack clean. Zerra DC builds. Macquarie sits in the money. Dexus told the ASX. Anthropic's Australian subsidiary is the tenant for Stage 1, customary approvals still to come. Mayor Smith's 1,000 jobs sit next to "not a done deal." If your communications team cannot hold those five facts without turning them into a race Australia has already won, they should not have the microphone.

OpenAI in Sydney last year is the comparison set. Two United States labs taking Australian megawatts is a market. It is not a skills strategy. Do not let the lease become the training update.

What this means for L&D

If you brief this, print inference-not-training on the first slide. Keep FIRB pending in the same sentence as the ribbon. Name Zerra, Macquarie, Dexus and the mayor. Do not brief done. Megawatts are not operators. The enablement work has to start while the concrete is still a drawing.
