Every board in the country has asked about AI by now, and the question usually lands on the CIO's desk. The CIO owns the data, the platforms, the security model and the budget line that turns a pilot into a service.

We started with 109 names from the CIO50 Australia lists for 2024 to 2026, then added iTnews Benchmark 2026 finalists and leaders found in media searches. That pool held 143. Thirty-four had a news report in the past 18 months naming them on a specific AI programme. After dropping people who had left the role and data or AI-only C-suite titles, we scored the rest on awards (40), media (30) and AI programme evidence (30).

Inside you get a one-page profile of each of the top 20 covering the AI work they have shipped and where they think it goes next, plus the five habits the list shares and the full scoring table.
